Beginner 1 and 2 - Stacey Aroney - Director of Competitive Swimming and Diving ([email protected])

Stacey begins her 14th year at Hathaway Brown this year. In her HB career, she has taught swimming within physical education classes for Early Childhood through Seventh grades, was the head coach for the HB Middle School Team, and has served as Varsity Assistant Coach while strategically shaping HB's aquatics program as the Director of Aquatics. Stacey spent four years as Director of Athletics and Physical Education at HB and has recently returned to the pool with the growth of the Barracudas program and success of the middle school and high school programs, yielding another IPSL Championship and a threepeat of the OHSAA DII State Championship.

After graduating from Ashland University with a Middle School Education degree, Stacey interned at Cleveland State University as the Aquatics Intern, working with the recreation center and athletic department. During her time at Cleveland State, Stacey assisted in scheduling and running USA Swimming meets and learning the business of swimming. After working at CSU, Stacey worked at the YMCA of Greater Cleveland as the Regional Aquatics Director and then found her home at Hathaway Brown. Stacey is an American Swim Coaches Association Level 2 coach and Level 1 Disability coach who has coached for the French Creek Marlins, CLE Swim, and Lake Erie Silver Dolphins in the past. She is also an American Red Cross Instructor Trainer, training lifeguards, swim instructors, babysitters, and for CPR Courses. She also holds a Master of Science in Exercise Science and Coaching and a Master of Arts in Athletic Administration and Coaching.

PreSenior - Jacob Ranta ([email protected])

Jacob started swimming in the second grade for the Ashtabula YMCA, and because of his coaches, went on to swim at the collegiate level at Wittenberg University. Ranta’s coaching career started during his first year teaching, where he served as an assistant coach at Yellow Springs High School for two years. Having grown up in Northeast Ohio, Ranta returned to the area in 2003 after accepting a teaching position with the Cleveland Municipal School District. Here, he continued to coach high school swimming, as well as baseball and softball. He soon returned to the USA swimming world to coach for CLE Swimming on the west side. Here, he not only served as the age group coach for the USA team but also served on the coaching staff for Elyria Catholic, Bay Village, Magnificat, and North Olmsted High Schools.  As a coach, Ranta prides himself on helping each swimmer reach their potential and achieve constant improvement in their technique.  Ranta currently teaches Biology at Brush High School, has been the head coach of the Hathaway Brown Middle School, and resides in Moreland Hills with his wife and two daughters, Eloise and Clara.

PreSenior/Senior - Eddis Singleton ([email protected])

Eddis Singleton is a product of all that Northeast Ohio Swimming has to offer.  He was born and raised in East Cleveland, Ohio, where he was a member of the Shaw High Swim Team.  He became a 2x state qualifier and District Champion.  His success there presented him with an opportunity to swim on a collegiate level as he was recruited by and swam for Coach Lavery at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio.  At this small D3 institution, he became a 3x national champion, 4x conference champion, and a school record holder. As a post-grad collegiate athlete, he continued swimming in the Greater Cleveland area before pursuing a spot on the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Teams.  Representing Swim MAC out of Charlotte, NC, he competed in the 2008 US OPEN as well as the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Trials. Eddis serves as an assistant coach for the HB high school team.

Head Site Coach - Eric Dennis ([email protected])

A seasoned veteran in the realm of aquatics, with 25+ years of coaching tenure under his belt, Eric brings a wealth of experience to his role with the Blazing Barracudas. Having begun his coaching journey at a young age, Eric's dedication and passion for the sport have propelled him to work with athletes across various levels of competition. His expertise lies not only in technical training but also in fostering a supportive and motivating environment for his swimmers. Over the years, Eric has consistently produced outstanding results, guiding numerous athletes to success at regional and national levels, including Zones, Juniors Nationals, U.S. Opens, and nurturing State Champions along the way.

Age Group/PreSenior/Senior - MacJilton "Mac" Lewis ([email protected])

Before coaching at Blazing Barracudas, Coach Mac served as the head swim coach at Mariemont High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Under his leadership, Mariemont qualified 12 athletes to the OHSAA state meet in 2021, and the girls’ team finished in 9th place at the state meet in 2022. Coach Mac was also the head swim coach at Mariemont Swim Club, a role in which he led the team to four Southern Ohio Swim League championship titles in six seasons. Coach Mac graduated from Cleveland State University in 2019 as an honors student. In the water at CSU, Mac was a four-year varsity swimmer, an All-Academic Horizon League athlete, and a six-time Horizon League championship meet finalist. Before his time at CSU, Mac attended Mariemont High School. He was a 16-time state meet qualifier, 13-time state meet finalist, the school record holder in the 200 IM, and a team captain his senior year. He was inducted into the Mariemont High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2020.

Head Site Coach - Rick Balcam ([email protected])

Rick began his coaching career 31 years ago under the direction of Jerry Holtrey.  Rick's expertise and dedication have qualified USA swimmers for Junior Nationals and State HS championships.  He was named Northeast Ohio Division 1 High School Coach of the Year in 2011.  His teams have won a combined 20 conference and sectional titles.  Rick has been the head coach of the Mayfield High School Varsity Swim Team for the past 19 years, producing state qualifiers throughout his reign.  Rick was a member of LESD and continued his competitive swimming career at Edinboro University, where he earned his BS in Education.  He currently teaches seventh-grade World History in the South Euclid Lyndhurst School District.  In his free time, Rick enjoys traveling with his wife and spending family time with his daughter and his dog.  When summer comes, you can find Rick fishing with good friends.  Rick believes swimming provides valuable life lessons!  "With dedication, hard work, and sacrifice, anything is possible!"

 

Beginner 2 - Francesca Nemetz ([email protected])

Francesca started her swimming career in Greensburg, PA, for Hempfield Aqua Club at the age of 7 and swam through high school for the Hempfield Area varsity team. After high school, Francesca swam 4 years for Gannon University and was named PSAC Freshman of the year in 2021 and received All PSAC honors. She has been teaching swim lessons for 6 years and began coaching with BBA in the fall of 2024 when she moved to Cleveland to pursue her engineering career at Swagelok. 

 

Age Group - John Elliott ([email protected])

John has been coaching swimming in the Cleveland area for over 30 years.  He has been the head coach of summer league, club, and high school teams, and has coached beginner to national-level swimmers, including several NCAA Division 1 All-Americans.  He believes technique is the key to fast swimming, and he is passionate about teaching swimmers to properly use their core to maximize both their efficiency in the water and their potential as swimmers.

Head Site Coach - Jeanne DeBonis ([email protected])

Jeanne became a USA Swimming coach in 2016, specializing in stroke technique and development. She served as head coach at Saint Joseph Academy (2021-2023) and currently serves as assistant coach at Nordonia High School. Her swimmers’ achievements include qualifying for local age group championships as well as the Ohio High School State Championships. Jeanne is a lifelong competitive athlete who belongs to the O.H. Platt High School (Meriden, CT) Athletic Hall of Fame. She was an NCAA Division III All-American Swimmer at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she earned a BS in Aeronautical Engineering. Post-college, Jeanne became a nationally-ranked runner and world-class triathlete, qualifying for the 2000 U.S. Women’s Olympic Marathon Trials and several Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. As 2011’s 70.3 Age-group World Champion, she received an honorable mention for USA Triathlon’s Masters Triathlete of the Year. Jeanne currently competes as an open-water marathon swimmer with a longest swim of 21 miles. She is a self-coached athlete and passionate student of swimming, possessing extensive knowledge of physical and mental performance that she is eager to share with her athletes.
